Two Organizations Receive Funding

In the fall of 2025, SNAP benefit delays prompted the activation of United Way of South Central Michigan’s Disaster Relief Fund in Jackson County for the first time.

United Way’s Disaster Relief Fund proactively supports response and recovery during times of crisis – natural or human-made – that affect individuals and families below the ALICE (Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed) threshold in the region.

Examples of use for the fund include 2024 tornado relief in Kalamazoo County, 2025 food assistance across our region, and 2026 extreme weather response.

“We were glad to be able to provide these critical resources to partners,” Associate Director of Community Impact Ebone Young said.

Black Food Sovereignty Coalition in Jackson was one of two organizations funded. Families, elderly individuals, and others impacted by reductions in food assistance were supported. The funds also helped with the volunteer coordination and materials for a winter gardening program which helped families grow their own food at home.

Another organization that received Disaster Relief funding was Partial to Girls, which helped support unhoused families and individuals during a gap in emergency shelter availability. The funds were used for hotel rooms, food and transportation.
