Be Prepared for Changes to Work Requirements  for SNAP and Medicaid

Work requirements for Medicaid and SNAP have undergone major changes at the federal level that will impact families in the state of Michigan. 

 Federal guidelines now require certain non-pregnant adults (ages 19–64) on Medicaid to complete 

 of work, community engagement, or approved job training.  

 Beneficiaries can also meet this requirement by demonstrating a monthly income of at least $580 (equivalent to 80 hours at federal minimum wage). 

 You are exempt if you are pregnant, disabled, medically frail, caring for a child under 14, or caring for someone with a disability.

 Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs) aged 18 to 64 face strict time-limited food assistance rules. Recipients must work, volunteer, or participate in a work, community service or education program for at least 

to receive benefits for more than 3 months in a 3-year period. 

 In Michigan, Time Limited Food Assistance (TLFA) work rules are rolling out statewide, requiring recipients to log 80 hours per month through employment, workfare, or Self-Initiated Community Service. 

How do you document your work or volunteer hours?

Adults without young children who rely on Medicaid or SNAP must show that they spend at least 80 hours per month working, in job training through Michigan Works! (

1. Be sure to manage your benefits and documentation in the MI Bridges system 

2. Talk to a MI Bridges caseworker if you have questions about your benefits and exemptions. 

To calculate the number of hours to volunteer, divide your monthly SNAP Benefits by 13.73 (Michigan’s minimum wage). 

The United Way of South Central Michigan (UWSCMI) offers free volunteer support to residents and nonprofits to document volunteer service in our six counties: Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, Jackson and Kalamazoo.
