I'm the freshly minted Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving at United Way of South Central Michigan.  I come to this work after an "apprenticeship" in Community Impact with UWSCMI as the Senior Associate for Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.  After almost thirty years with the United Methodist Church as a local pastor and regional church executive, I joined United Way in February of 2025.  One of the "North Stars" guiding my life has been my certainty that there is no such thing as “us” and “them”.  There's only us and we're all in this together.  United Way seeks to make a similar vision real in the communities that we serve.  The conviction that every person should be valued, thriving and connected for the common good shapes the work we do and it's work that I want to move forward in all the ways that I can.  I'm often asked what United Way does.  While it's difficult to unpack all the what and how the “why” has become increasingly clear: 

we do what we do so that everyone has what they need and everybody gets a chance.

  I am in what I imagine is the "last act" of my professional life. I can't think of any better purpose than to invest myself in bringing people, ideas and resources together to breathe new life into United Way's mission.
