Dear U.S. Senators and Representatives from Michigan,

We are writing to you today to ask that you take action to protect the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and ensure payments continue in November for the 

 who rely on this vital federal program. 

SNAP is a critical lifeline for many Michigan families who are struggling to put food on the table, especially given the rising cost of groceries in our current economy. This includes nearly 

. In addition to the human cost of letting payments lapse, it will also have an adverse economic impact on the 

more than 9,000 authorized retailers across Michigan that participate in SNAP. These retailers redeem nearly $2 billion in SNAP benefits annually

Allowing SNAP payments to be delayed this November due to the federal government shutdown is not only unconscionable, but illegal. The Trump administration is legally required to continue providing SNAP payments during a shutdown contrary to what has been publicly stated. In fact, the federal government has managed to keep SNAP benefits flowing to families throughout every previous shutdown. Contingency reserves are available and are required to be used to ensure that SNAP remains in place for participants. These contingency funds consist of the American people’s tax dollars and the administration’s failure to use them as intended is nothing short of waste.

We are deeply concerned about a potential delay in SNAP payments in the upcoming month as it will directly harm Michiganders in every congressional district in our state. This is coming at a time when food insecurity is already on the rise in Michigan.

We urge you to instruct the United States Department of Agriculture to do what they are legally required to do, which is to use the reserve funds that are in place to keep this important program operational during the shutdown. The tools are available and steps should have already been taken to make this happen. Please do your part to stand up for the people you represent by taking action now.
